California Cup 2011 Leg 1

Countdown has started

Time to put the recent loss aside and get down to derby business. Its Blue versus Burgundy! It's North Cal versus South Cal! It's Good versus Evil! Well, maybe not that bad. Its the first leg of the California Cup! Both clubs are 1-1-0 on the season. Both clubs scored 5 total points on the season. Training this week is going to be crazy and make sure you watch what you say to the press.

Busch Bested Reis

Gateway United 3 Gold Coast 1

- Frustrating! Matt Reis was looking real good once again between the pipes until the 83rd minute when a PK was awarded. It was painful to watch Charlie Davies nail the shot and completely change the scoreline of a very tight affair. Davies plays for Gateway United and a point went to wrong way in a double switch since Reis lost his clean sheet. Even with all this, for a while it was looking like the Suns would be able to salvage a point in a match. That was until Jon Busch finished the Suns off. "It was a tough result. Game 1 hero Omar Bravo was ejected early in this match and the rest of the guys didn't fair much better. Only David Beckham was able to score on the box score." said a Suns spokesperson. Whatever went wrong will have to be made right in a hurry. The first leg of the California Cup is next week.

MatchDay 2

Its always a joy to play against a club that wants to win as much as you do. Gateway United has been in the BSL since the beginning and in observing this club since joing the league myself I can tell you the competition will be fierce. Once again Gateway United has built what looks like a strong line up. This is the leagues Game of the Week so the pressure is on the both of us.

A Bravo Opening

Gold Coast 4 Pennsylvania 1It did not take long for the Suns to get production out of Omar Bravo. His 2 goals sealed the deal against the expansion Pennsylvania Stoners. Kenny Cooper, the clubs first pick in the draft also scored a goal. As for Kyle Beckerman, why was he left on the bench. He deserved the right to start in the opener and the managers mistake cost the club another goal.

Reis Is In

The Gold Coast faithful want an answer. Why Matt Reis again. True his best years are behind him and true he will play for a Revolution club that isn't expected to contend this year. Well he still should have some gas in the tank and one has to think that the Revs are going to take some shots and Reis will have to save those shots. Plus he should be good for a handuful of shutouts. He always is. Have no fear Gold Coast faithful, if Reis is not the man for the job, he will be replaced with a keeper who is. But, he has the job again as the Suns keeper for the start of the season.

Beckerman a Familiar Face

Kyle Beckerman holds a special place in the hearts of Gold Coast fans. He scored the game winner in the 6-5 epic win over Union Southern California in the Majors Cup Semi Finals last year. "You could say Beckerman brought home our first trophy" said a Suns spokesperson. With a little patience, the Suns have resigned Beckerman for another year. He will be accompanied by Alejandro Moreno, Deguzman, Renteria and Perovic. "The training camp is taking shape and these guys should be great roll players to our big guns."

Picking Men Not Boys

The press conference held March 1st was filled with reporters as three more additions were announced to the roster of the Gold Coast Football Club. The excitement was in the air as the questions came pooring in. One reporter asked what the expectations are for the season. Beckham answered that until a full roster was intact such questions would have to wait, but did mumble the men sitting next to him might think differently. Another reporter asked if age was going to be a factor. Cunningham replied that he didn't sign on to sit on the sidelines. The best comment of the day came from the Suns owner who was quoted as saying "I'm guessing we might have to give Union S.C. a free point in the score sheet just to make it fair. They're drafting toddlers compared to us" More to come as the draft continues.
